Kunming, the "Spring City" of China, is a paradise for outdoor lovers. With its mild climate, stunning landscapes, and diverse trails, it’s the perfect destination for hikers. This 3-day itinerary is designed for those who want to explore Kunming’s natural beauty while challenging themselves on some of the region’s best hiking routes.
Start your trip with a visit to the UNESCO-listed Shilin (Stone Forest), about 90 minutes from Kunming. This karst landscape is a surreal maze of towering limestone formations. While it’s a popular tourist spot, few visitors take the time to hike the less-traveled paths.
After lunch, head to Jiuxiang Scenic Area, known for its underground rivers and dramatic caves. The real gem here is the Canyon Trail, a 3-hour hike that combines cave exploration with cliffside paths.
Wake up early for a sunrise hike in the Western Hills, overlooking Dianchi Lake. The Dragon Gate Trail is a local favorite, offering a mix of forested paths and stone-carved stairways.
After descending, rent a bike and cycle along Dianchi Lake’s Greenway, a 30-km scenic route. For a shorter option, walk the Haigeng Dam section, where you can spot migratory birds in winter.
For serious hikers, Jiaozi Snow Mountain (4,247m) is a must. Located 3 hours from Kunming, this alpine trek is strenuous but unforgettable.
If high-altitude hiking isn’t your style, explore Golden Temple (Jindian) Park. The Mingfeng Hill Trail is a gentle 2-hour loop through pine forests, with glimpses of Kunming’s skyline.
Kunming’s trails cater to all levels, from leisurely walks to mountain summits. Whether you’re chasing waterfalls or alpine vistas, this itinerary ensures an unforgettable hiking adventure.
