Hi there! I’m Brandon Steele — a 34-year-old educator currently living and working in the vibrant city of Kunming, Yunnan Province. Born and raised in the Midwest of the United States, I’ve always had a passion for knowledge, personal growth, and pushing boundaries — both physical and intellectual. With a name like Steele, you'd expect someone who thrives on strength, and I’d say that fits me well. I bring energy and resilience into both my work and lifestyle, and I try to approach each day with purpose and optimism.
After completing my graduate degree in Education and Linguistics, I taught for a few years in the States before deciding to take a leap and experience life abroad. That decision brought me to China, and I couldn’t be more grateful for where it’s led me. Kunming — often dubbed “the City of Eternal Spring” — instantly won me over with its perfect climate, laid-back vibe, and rich cultural diversity. It’s a place that blends tradition with modernity, nature with city life, and I’ve found a true sense of belonging here.
Professionally, I work in a local international school, where I teach English and educational theory. Working with students from different backgrounds has given me a whole new appreciation for the power of cultural exchange. I enjoy helping my students build confidence and develop critical thinking skills, but I’m also learning from them every day. In the classroom, I’m animated, active, and hands-on — I believe learning should be dynamic, just like life.
Outside of work, I’m an avid traveler and fitness enthusiast. There’s something about hiking up a mountain trail or exploring an ancient village that recharges me in a way nothing else does. Yunnan is a goldmine for anyone with an adventurous spirit — weekends often find me out in places like Dali, Lijiang, or the stone forests of Shilin. I’ve camped by Erhai Lake, trekked in the foothills near Shangri-La, and even joined a few local cycling tours that push both stamina and scenery to the max. I thrive on motion, and I guess that’s part of why I love Kunming: it offers endless chances to move, explore, and connect.
Living in China has also brought a new depth to my understanding of community and tradition. I admire how locals here celebrate the small things — whether it’s a cup of Pu’er tea in the morning sun or a spontaneous dance in a city square. There’s a rhythm to life in Kunming that’s both peaceful and invigorating. I’ve taken up Tai Chi in the mornings and often play basketball in the evenings with coworkers and neighbors. It’s easy to stay active here, and I’ve made some strong friendships through sports and travel.
Food is another huge part of my journey here. As a guy who lifts and trains regularly, I’m mindful about nutrition, but that doesn’t stop me from diving into the local flavors. Yunnan cuisine is wild and bold — full of spices, herbs, and surprises. One of my favorite dishes is “Crossing the Bridge Noodles,” which I can happily eat after a long workout or a day of hiking. And don’t get me started on the mushrooms — I’ve never seen so many edible varieties in one place!
What I appreciate most about my life here is the sense of balance I’ve been able to find. Back in the States, everything felt rushed — but here in Kunming, I’ve found a space to breathe, grow, and give back. I’ve taken on small community projects, like volunteering in local English clubs and hosting cultural exchange workshops. Being a foreigner doesn’t make me an outsider — if anything, it’s made me more engaged, more curious, and more involved.
Looking ahead, I see myself staying in China for the long haul — maybe branching into educational consulting or starting a language learning platform that bridges Western and Eastern approaches to teaching. Whatever the next step is, I know it’ll involve movement, discovery, and connection — the things that drive me every day.
I’m Brandon Steele — teacher, traveler, and believer in strong minds, strong bodies, and stronger communities.
